MEDIATION TRAINING

  Mediation Training is a process in which a person is trained in mediation, negotiation, and communication. DMA's mediation training satisfies the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution requirements to become a registered neutral/mediator. Here at Decision Management, we are proud of our training and are considered to be top quality mediation trainers. We offer a variety of trainings starting with our General Civil Mediation. While covering a variety of subjects in our Civil Mediation, the negotiation portion of our training focuses on Interest
 Based Negotiation Techniques as described by Roger Fisher, William L. Ury, and Bruce Patton in their book Getting to Yes. This book, while not required reading for training, is an excellent resource for people interested in perusing mediation. Our training includes the former as well as:

·        The Nature of Conflict;

·        The Mediation Process and Responsibilities;

·         Responsibilities of the Mediator;

·        Negotiation Skills;

·        Professionalism;

a

·        Dealing With Impasse;

·        Advanced Communication Skills;

·        Ethics in Mediation;

·        Diversity; and,

·        Much More

DMA incorporates new educational techniques known as “accelerated learning”. These techniques are specifically more powerful and effective than the standard learning to which all of us have been exposed. The training also includes Real-Play mediation experiences where the participants can get a real-life grasp on how mediation works. Bob also includes a number of associate trainers who each bring with own individual experience in ADR to the table to give the student a thorough understanding on mediation from a diverse background.

Also included in the training cost, we are offering one month of coaching 3 to 6 months after training completion to further assist our trainees who are doing mediations and/or interested in the field of mediation. This coaching will assist you through the initial hurdles of entering mediation and establishing a practice.

We provide quality refreshments throughout the training and will be having relevant door prizes. In addition to the educational experience, our training offers a welcoming, warm, and open environment promoting new friendships. Often, participants opt to spend lunches together and continue contact even after completion of the training.

How Do I Become Registered as a Mediator?

The State of Georgia requires that you complete a 30 hour General Civil Mediation Training and observe 5 actual mediations or attend a practicum training. With the appropriate paperwork, which can be provided at the end of training, you may then apply for state registration.

What is a Practicum?

Setting up observations in five separate mediations to fulfill the state registration requirement can often be difficult. As an alternative, DMA offers a two day practicum training where we will expose you to various different mediation styles and examine their strengths and weaknesses. A practicum fulfills the observation requirements of state registration.

Is There a Market for Mediators Right Now?

The answer to this question depends on a lot of factors. The short answer is yes. Conflict is a part of life and will always be a part of life and where there is conflict, there is a need for mediation. The long answer is that the answer to this question really depends on you. Upon completing training, clients do not automatically begin to line up outside your door. Like any business, mediation requires an investment in personal time to build the practice, develop a clientele, and invest in niche marketing. If you are willing to invest hard work and dedication with some basic business smarts, you can succeed in this area, but if you succeed and how well you  succeed is up to you.
