Note: Completion of
a training program does not guarantee that any
particular court-connected program must or will accept
you as a neutral to serve the program. Each local court
program exercises its discretion with reference to the
qualifications of each neutral. For this reason a local
program may require a neutral to have additional
training, education or experience beyond the Georgia
Supreme Court's requirements. Contact the local program
in which you are interested or the Georgia Office of
Dispute Resolution for more information on requirements.
What Does Mediation Training Consist of?
The New DMA president and advanced practitioner Bob
Berlin is lead trainer in all mediation classes. With a
strong background in education, Bob incorporates
accelerated learning techniques to create a fun
environment conducive to learning. Over the course of 4
or 5 days, participants will learn about the nature of
conflict, the mediation process, and interest-based
negotiation techniques, plus get a real-life grasp on
how mediation works through real-play (role-play)
experiences.
In addition to the educational experience, our
training offers a welcoming, warm, and open environment
promoting new friendships. Often, participants opt to
spend lunches together and continue contact after
completion of the course. Are there Opportunities
for Advanced Mediation Training?
After completing the basic course of General Civil
Mediation Training & Practicum, there are many
opportunities for advanced training. Our Domestic &
Family Mediation Training focuses on providing mediators
with the skills to successfully conduct and resolve
mediations involving divorce and family matters, a basic
understanding of domestic law in Georgia including child
support guidelines and enforcement, and Georgia Supreme
Court ADR rules and the financial and tax implications
of divorce. This additional training is required by the
state of Georgia to conduct court referred divorce
mediations.
Continuing education courses covering many relevant
topics are available. Please see our schedule for more
information. CEs and CLEs are approved for these
courses. Who Can Sign Up for Mediation Training?
Anyone. This training provides skills and techniques for
all areas of your life, personal and professional.
How Do I Become Registered as a Neutral?
The Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution requires that
you complete a 40-hour General Civil Mediation Training
and Practicum. Please visit
for more
information. What is a Practicum?
A Practicum is an opportunity to practice being the
mediator while gaining valuable feedback from industry
professionals. Hone your skills and techniques through
observation and real-play experiences.
Is There a Market for Mediators Right Now?
Yes. Conflict is a part of life and will always be a
part of life. Where there is conflict, there is a need
for mediation. Upon completing training, clients do not
automatically begin to line up outside your door. Like
any business, mediation requires an investment in
personal time to build a practice, develop a clientele,
and invest in niche marketing. If you are willing to
develop a plan and work hard, add dedication and basic
business smarts, you can succeed in this area. How well
you succeed is up to you!
